Praise For One Family, Two Family, New Family: Stories And Advice For Stepfamilies,
By Lisa Cohn and William Merkel, Ph.D.

"Of all the books written about the unique struggles and opportunities of stepfamilies, none combine both wisdom and wit as well as Cohn and Merkel's articulate and compassionate treatment of the subject. One Family, Two Family will be an enormous aid to anyone involved in creating a New family."
--Alan S. Gurman, Ph.D., Recipient of the American Psychological Association's 2003 Award for Distinguished Contribution to Family Psychology and Professor, University of Wisconsin Medical School

“Clearly committed to each other and to their children, Cohn and Merkel write a heartwarming story in a helpful "he thought" "she thought" format about their transition from single parenting to successful stepfamily living.”
--Dr. Margorie Engel, President & CEO, Stepfamily Association of America

"It's about time someone addressed, head on, the real problems inherent in integrating stepfamilies. What makes 'One Family, Two Family, New Family,' so meaningful is that it is written from experience--from Cohn and Merkel's own encounters rather than from authors who merely pontificate on the subject. What makes it compelling is that it is quite simply a great story! What makes it valuable is that its lessons are timeless."
--Stacy D. Phillips, Certified Family Law Specialist by the State Bar of California
Board of Legal Specialization and managing partner, Phillips, Lerner & Lauzon

"In 'One Family, Two Family, New Family,' authors Cohn and Merkel capture the essence of the stepfamily experience. Through examples of crisis and heartfelt moments of joy, the authors offer narrative that helps lend understanding to the emotional minefield of stepfamily life. They share their perspectives, permitting you to read the thought bubbles of all involved. If you are in a blended family or are considering creating one, Cohn and Merkel present must-read insights."
--Paul and Dara Volker, creators of Our Family Wizard: The Internet Parenting Planner

“I love this book. I like the emotional honesty and the fact that it’s a love story. What better way to address the pitfalls and realities of stepfamilies? I go for the book’s solution of one household, two refrigerators; one heart, two wallets. Families are not simple, and this book brings that home in a very pleasant, positive way. A very nice read, and of tremendous help to anyone forming a stepfamily.”
--Keith McLeod, publisher, Harbinger Press, whose books include The Ultimate Survival Guide For The Single Father and Where’s Daddy?

“The lessons Lisa Cohn and William Merkel have learned through building their stepfamily are effectively shared through a unique his-and-hers perspective. This book is practice, not theory.”
-- Kathleen Fox, author of Making the Best of Second Best: A Guide to Positive Stepparenting

“Anyone who has tried to combine families or marry into an existing one will recognize themselves and their difficulties in One Family, Two Family, New Family. This is an enjoyable read as a romantic story full of sympathy, insights, humor and great practicality from others who have attempted one of life’s most daunting challenges.”
--K.C. Wilson, author, Co-Parenting For Everyone

"This is a story with a lot of heart! The authors take the reader from the beginning of a new relationship to a stepfamily. This well-written book creatively puts together other families’ stories, with Lisa and Bill going into detail related to the theme of each chapter. Lisa’s sections speak in exquisite detail about relationships! Bill’s sections offer a semi-theoretical foundation connected to each chapter’s theme. As a family scholar, and as a family therapist who has worked with a lot of families going through marital transitions, I found this mixture fascinating."
--Dr. Shirley M.H. Hanson, Professor Emeritus, Oregon Health Sciences University School of Nursing, a marriage and family therapist in Portland, Oregon, and the author of many books pertaining to families.

"I loved your book. I will become a stepmother in probably a couple of years and have been doing a lot of reading. It is the most realistic and helpful book that I’ve read. It described the really hard stuff, but it also gave hope. There was no sugar-coating, which is what we need. I also took away from the book that this union can look anyway that we want, as long as everyone’s needs are getting met. Thank you for such a heartfelt and honest look at blending."
--Amanda Gorman, a reader

One Family, Two Family, New Family is a 2004 Gold National Parenting Publications Award winner. Following is a review from National Parenting Publications (www.nappa.parenthood.com)
One Family, Two Family, New Family: Stories and Advice for Stepfamilies, by Lisa Cohn and William Merkel, Ph.D.; Riverwood Books, 2004; $16.95; 1-800-380-8286, www.riverwoodbooks.com. Expectant parents are often told their lives will change in ways they can’t predict. It’s also said that stepfamilies don’t “blend” overnight. Both are vast understatements. This warm guide offers a peek deep inside the emotional complications of several stepfamilies (including the authors’ own) and, at the same time, lets you see how you can make yours work better. It almost reads like a novel, and that’s good.
